The Garden Bug: Vernal Equinox

By Brenda Weaver

The vernal equinox”

The first day of spring arrives Thursday, March 20, 2025. This day is known as the “vernal equinox.” In Latin, ver means "spring," aequus means "equal" and nox means "night."

On this day, Earth's position allows the northern and southern hemispheres to receive the sun's rays equally; night and day are nearly equal in length. Spring comes to the northern hemisphere and autumn to the southern hemisphere.
